Oestrogens encode love for female mice

چکیده
Timing is everything when trying to land a mate. In many species, female receptivity tomale sexual advances is synchronized to fertility and is mediated by steroid hormones produced in the gonads, such as oestrogens. How these hormones tune neural circuits to transition females to mate-seeking mode is unclear. In a series of elegant experiments, neuroscientist Jenna McHenry and colleagues in Garret Stuber’s laboratory at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA, investigated a hormone-responsive neural circuit important for mate attraction in female mice.

Evidence for a role of early oestrogens in the central processing of sexually relevant olfactory cues in female mice.
We previously found that female aromatase knockout (ArKO) mice showed less investigation of socially relevant odours as well as reduced sexual behaviour. We now ask whether these behavioural deficits might be due to an inadequate processing of odours in female ArKO mice. Therefore, we exposed female ArKO mice to same- and opposite-sex urinary odours and determined the expression of the immediat...
متن کاملGender and inter-species influence on coagulation tests of rats and mice.
INTRODUCTION Rats and mice have been used to evaluate effects of natural and synthetic oestrogens. However, data about oestrogen's effects on haemostasis in rodents is very limited. The aim of this work was to standardize blood coagulation screening tests in adult male, female, and ovariectomized (Ovx) Wistar rats and CD1 mice in an effort to evaluate the influence of gender and species differe...
متن کاملCharacterization of Aromatase Expression in the Adult Male and Female Mouse Brain. I. Coexistence with Oestrogen Receptors α and β, and Androgen Receptors
Aromatase catalyses the last step of oestrogen synthesis. There is growing evidence that local oestrogens influence many brain regions to modulate brain development and behaviour. We examined, by immunohistochemistry, the expression of aromatase in the adult male and female mouse brain, using mice in which enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) is transcribed following the physiological acti...

Oestrogenic steroid hormones (‘oestrogens’) have a crucial role in cellular regulation in all vertebrate species. The levels required to bring about such changes are very low, around 0.1–1 pg/ml (picograms per millilitre) of serum. It has been known for over five decades that oestrogens affect the development of the male reproductive system of mammals (Zuckerman, 1940). Nonetheless, oestrogenic...
متن کاملCellular and biochemical mechanisms by which environmental oestrogens influence reproductive function.
The biology and physiology of the male as well as female reproductive system is hormonally regulated. Abnormalities in the dynamics of hormone production, metabolism and elimination, as well as their binding to certain target tissues, has been associated with pathophysiological conditions of the reproductive system. Although oestrogens are known to be one of the major hormone groups in regulati...
